The Bird of Paradise plant is highly evocative of the tropics despite not having evolved in such an environment. Instead it is far tougher than one would first imagine. To have a bird of paradise flowering in the UK would perhaps sound like a fantasy to some, but with a a little environmental manipulation combined with a touch of cold protection, it is relatively easy to grow a bird of paradise plant - Strelitzia reginae in the UK.
